With the continuous enlargement of power grid, the demand to system security and stability is getting more and more. The large power grid brings latent threat and challenge to system security and stability while getting enormous economic benefits simultaneously. This paper is enclosed this problem and study in the nonlinear control theory in a number of indicators of synchronous generator excitation control.Excitation controller, as a main part of excitation system, is very important to the safe and steady operation of power systems. With the development of large-scale integrate circuit technology and computer technology, microcomputer-based excitation controller will become the main stream of excitation controllers in the future. Constant improvement in excitation control method set an even higher requirement for the computation of the microcomputer -based excitation controller. Based on this request, the paper studies the DSP-based excitation controller by using DSP (Digital Signal Processor) as the control center.Firstly, this paper introduces the developing tendency of excitation controller, including the development of hardware and control method, microcomputer-based excitation controller's hardware structure and requirement of excitation control method to hardware. Secondly, this paper also introduces the theory basis of Multiple Indicator nonlinear excitation controller, and the theory and design of the excitation limiter. Finally, this paper deals with the design of the DSP-based excitation controller's hardware and realization method of its software from the aspects of DSP, A/D conversion, FFT. The DSP-based excitation controller adopts many advanced technologies, such as alternating current sampling, digital pulse etc. Because of the adoption of these advanced technologies, the excitation controller's structure is simpler, its performance is reliable and its operation convenient.The DSP-based controller in this exciting semi-loop simulation on the experimental device. Results of the test show that all functions of the excitation controller are efficient and some are even better than the other microcomputer-based excitation controllers.
