The problem of reactive power and harmonics quality menaces seriously the safe operation of power network. Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) ,as the important component of the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) equipments, attracts extensive attention for its perfect performance such as smooth regulation of Var and dynamic capability. It applies electric and electronic technology, computer technology and modern control technology to the power system. with the control of outputting voltage amplitude and phase angle, it can regulate continuously the reactive power in the whole range from capacitive reactive power to inductive reactive power, realize to compensate rapidly the demand for the reactive power of the system, thus can suppress the voltage fluctuating and strengthen systematic stability.The thesismain firstly introduces development and current situation of STATCOM,analyzes its working principle ,control method and the basic configuration of the multilevel main circuit. Secondly,analyzes the development of reactive current detection methods, mainly studys the detection methods of the instantaneous reactive power theory, and does the software design andemulation analyse in the i_p ,i_q method. The software adopts modularization program, shows theflowchart of every module.Thridly, researchs mainly the STATCOM digital control system and studys the scheme of hardware system. takes digital signal processor TMS320LF2812 and CPLD as core part of control circuit, in which DSP can take current and voltage sample, data process, control, real time calculate etc, and CPLD generates the PWM wave, then the device can realize fast dynamic response to electrical system. In control circuit,there are signal modulating circuit, synchro detecion current and the peripheral interfce currents of the DSP and CPLD etc. studys telecommunication interface of the PROFIBUS, isolating driver circuit and safeguard methods of IGCT.Lastly, discusses some basic modulation principle of SPWM based on multilevel.Base on the cascaded multilevel main circuit,studys the realization of the Triangular carrier phase shifting-switch frequency optional PWM(PS-SFO-PWM) made up of Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) device.
