Ambiguity Of Sketch In Industrial Design And Sketch-Reinterpretation In Design Group

Sketching is the core element in the process of concept forming in industrial design. However, there are few studies on it currently and these studies generally target at individual designer. With the trend of team work design affairs, how to share opinions and exchange ideas through sketching has become an important issue that must be addressed. In this paper, the"ambiguity"of sketch will be deeply discussed and then, with this characteristic, a way of sketching communication in industrial design team will be explored.Based on the relevant studies on sketching as well as the theories of cognitive psychology, the paper makes in-depth analysis and research on the ambiguity of design sketch. The process of sketching will be divided into three aspects in microcosmic scope: sketch recognition phase, design thinking phase and design reprensentation phase, in which the changing principle of sketching image in design process will be analysed. According to this, the paper summarizes the team-sketching communication model and gets a sketch-reinterpretaion method. Finally, the concept will be experimented through two design cases and based on the survay, it turns out that this method can improve the team efficiency greatly.This paper proposes some innovative ideas about design sketching including: (1) It makes an in-depth discussion on the ambiguity of design sketch and creatively analyses the changing principle of sketching image in design process; (2) It summarizes a team-sketching communication model and gets a sketch-reinterpretaion method, which bridges the gap of the research on team-sketching communication in industrial design. The ways and model in the process of concept forming presented by the paper will give the beneficial reference to the design section in corporation and the design companies, especially the domestic ones.
