This project was granted by the project of the National Science Foundation. (Contract No: 50575103).A linear ultrasonic motor (LUM) has a broad application prospect in the drive and control of a small and precise linear movement devices, it plays an important role which could not be replaced by the traditional motor in the following high-tech fields: precise instrument and device, astronautics, medical field, robotics, and so on.This thesis aims at the realization of the LUM based on vibration in plane of a thin plate, and studies on its model design, simulation, and driving. The following are the chief research achievements and work of this thesis.First, the characteristics, structure and definition of the LUM are systematically introduced. Current research and development status are comprehensively discussed. The application prospect of the LUM is also summarized. Aiming at the shortages of this kind of LUMS in the lab, the improved technique is proposed.Next, based on the achievements in the lab, the emphases of the research are determined. One is modifying the mounting method of the stator to decrease, even eliminate the influences on the vibration modes. The other is finding a way which can control the resonance frequencies, and finally tuning them to be the same one. The project studied the mechanism of the linear ultrasonic motor based on vibration in plane. From a sequence input voltage signals, the excitation process of operating vibration modes was explained. It is theoretical proved that the elliptical movement on the driven tip be formed.Third, according to the basic requirements of the drive of the Ultrasonic Motors and the characteristics of the multilayer piezoelectric ceramics, the features of the drive for the multilayer piezoelectric ceramics are proposed. A drive based on the integrated circuits is developed. The author presents two programs of the drive for the multilayer piezoelectric ceramics which is proved by the emulations by the circuit simulation software.At last, two samples of the linear ultrasonic motor were manufactured. The second one is improved on the structures against the first one. And the second motor is proved smoothly operated and has better performances with the experiments.
