With its development, the Floating Protection Storage and Offloading Unit's (FPSO) power system not only consists of high voltage network and low voltage network, but also gets more and more complex network structure, so the analysis and research of protection of FPSO power system become stringent and breaking through the key technique that restricts the design of FPSO power system is significant. This paper does some basic research on the protection of FPSO power system.Basing on the conventional marine design method, this paper applies the terrene design method to settle the difficulties of the FPSO power system, which offer a theoretical reference to the FPSO engineering.This paper firstly analyses the specialty of the FPSO power system, especially the special working condition and the using demand of the system, points out the difficulties on system design and engineering. For avoiding the damage aroused by the very large short circuit current especially in FPSO, this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of short circuit current restraint, such as inserting inductive reactance in serious, connecting parallel resistance and the Is-Limiter, concludes that the Is-Limiter is the best method because it not only can effectively restrain the short circuit current of the power system but also is very economic. For the traditional methods of selective protection, which are based on electric current or time, can not meet the requirement of entirely protection of FPSO, this paper introduces a new logical selective protection method, which can easily settle the problem and be suitable for marine use. Furthermore, to meet the high requirement of personnel safety and equipment automation of FPSO, this paper also introduces the scheme of intelligent distribution control and protection system for the power system. As the conclusion, it is approved by the customer that this intelligent control function and distributed network framework can not only be applicable the FPSO's different working conditions, but also have the high performance versus price ratio.
