Nowadays, unmanned substation is a new trend for electrical power system with the fast development of new science and technology. People have already actualized the transfer of data from the substations to our control center, which is so-called'four teles'including telemetering, telesignalisation, telecontrol and teleregulation. However, the local substation also needs the surveillance of the real-time environment and the equipment condition, such as the fire, stealing, and the status of the breakers etc. So, it is insufficient to realizing the full automation of the substations just relying on the traditional'four teles'.Along with development of the computer technology, multimedia technology and the communication science, we have already realized the digitization of the image and the sound, and we are now able to deal with sound and image within a long-distance and under a thorough research. These technologies may definitely be introduced into the electrical power system to push the technologies of the unmanned substations ahead, which means we can add a brand-new remote control method called'tele-vision'in addition to the traditional telemetering, telesignalisation, telecontrol and teleregulation. The'tele-vision'not only refers to the real-time image of the spot transferred to our control center, it also should have the function of alarming system to activate the local security equipment when necessary.Today, the computers can automatically diagnose from the data acquired and find the hidden errors or trouble to achieve the real-time surveillance based on the image processing and the image analysis. In the field of industry, there are many situations that we are unable to monitor the equipment on spot effectively. The article does realize the unmanned substation to have a'tele-vision'to recognize and distinguish the image submitted from local substations on the scene by means of digital image processing. It would not only content the power supply system to establish a safe and automatic substation under control but also have some use for reference in other relevant industries as well.The article begins with the application of'tele-vision'in the substations, emphasizing the real-time image acquiring of the ordinary CCD used in the unmanned substations and automatic reorganization of flame image, which is based on the fire auto-surveillance of digital images.The technology of auto-surveillance of fire image is for the purpose of detecting fire automatically grounded on the image information on the spot, uniting the advantage of digital image processing and the high efficiency of modern computer languages such as Matlab. The article integrates the computer graphics, digital image processing and pattern recognition, embarking on the features of dynamic morphology of fire and the features in the color space to build a new way of fire detection. The whole process includes acquiring fire images, pretreatment of fire images, image segmentation and pattern recognition which are conducted by the Matlab experiments. The experiments cover all parts of the fire image processing and achieve some effects for readers to understand the usage of the methods to deal with the images.There is a comprehensive experiment at the end of the article involving the process of the image acquiring, image pretreatments, segmentation of images and the recognition of different patterns of fire images. The experiment was conducted in detail and gained a relatively high dependability.
