There are permanent magnets and field coils which are both exciting sources in hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM). It's characterized by high power density and capability of regulating magnetic field. So it provides one new type of machine for aeronautic starter/generator system.The magnetic characteristic and starter controlling technique of a novel Tangential-set Magnet HESM(TM-HESM) are studied in this paper. Configuration and operating principle of the TM-HESM are firstly introduced. Then the magnetic field distribution and static-state characteristic of permanent magnet motor of the machine are analyzed by 2D FEM, and the principle of optimizing design is also presented. Its magnetic field and static-state characteristic are analyzed by 2D electric magnetic field finite element simulation. At the same time, the influence of flux barriers, air-gap length and width of permanent magnet on performance of the machine is studied. Characteristic and regulating range of magnetic field in TM-HESM are investigated by theoretic analysis and 3D FEM. and means of optimizing permanent magnet structure, restraining supersaturation of axial magnetic part way and optimizing length of extend parts of machine are given and validated. Finally closed phase current which continues flowing based on analysis of theories and simulation combined magnetic field and external circuit is studied, and PWM_on_PWM controlling method is applied to solve the problem during starting period.
