There are permanent magnets and field coils which are both exciting sources in hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM). It's characterized by high power density and capability of regulating magnetic field. So it provides a new type of machine for aeronautic generator system.The basic configuration, magnetic characteristic and output characteristic of hybrid excitation synchronous brushless generator (HESBG) are studied in this paper. Digital automatic voltage regulator (AVR) technique of HESBG are also studied in this paper. Basic configuration and operating principle of HESBG are firstly introduced. According to the radial/axial distribution of magnetic field, equivalent magnetic circuit model is developed. The magnetic field distribution and static-state characteristic of HESBG are analyzed by 3D finite element method (3D-FEM), and the principle of optimizing design is also presented. The configuration of magnet and axial distribution are improved. The principle of optimizing design is proved by magnetic analyses. Then the Characteristic and regulating range of magnetic field in air gap is studied. Transient-state characteristic including no-load characteristic, external characteristic, regulation characteristic and Armature reaction are studied by 3D-FEM when optimizing structure is acquired. Finally the digital automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and software has been designed. The basic principle of the system is proved by experiment.
