As an aid for traditional power supply, DG is widely utilized and playing a more and more important role in power system. The author classifies and discusses several popular DG techniques, whose disadvantages and advantages are presented. The introduction of DG, by which the distribution system is changed into a source owned system, may cause series of influences on distribution system operation and security. Losses problem of distribution system is addressed in this paper. Based on ideal and practical models of distribution system, the author discusses and concludes the DG influence on power losses, considering three related factors: the relative magnitude between the DG and load, the location of DG and operating condition. Additionally to fulfill the special requirement of power solution in distribution system, the back/forward sweep algorithm is improved using PV nodal sensitivity matrix. The new algorithm is tested to be fast and available to handle PV node. DG either reduces or increases system loss, so it needs to be placed correctly. On a radial feeder under three static load models, a placement method is advanced analytically to minimum the loss by optimizing the size and location of DG. The situation is complicated as the distribution system is of network structure. According to the concept of nodal active-power loss sensitivity, a new approach for single DG placement is presented and tested.
