As a general gearing machine, reducer is the crucial element of the complete plants, the application of diagnostic or testing procedures to the reducer is the preconditions for its normal operation. Fault Diagnosis Expert System is a newly developed discipline in practical application, it is a computer program that uses great knowledge which is gained from many human experts and reasoning to solves the specialized problems, It can simulation, reproduce, save and copy the results so it widely used in application. In response to the features of reducer, this paper use the designing ideas of expert system to develop a Fault Diagnosis Expert System of Reducer ,the purpose is to realize the exactness and rapidity of the results of diagnose, to ensure that the equipment is under safty, reliability. In this paper, the importance of mechanical diagnose and the defects in the traditional fault diagnosis of reducer were introduced firstly . Then, the fundamental theory and method of fault diagnosis technique and the knowledge of expert system were expatiated. Then expounded the important and feasibility of the variation signal analysis in the area of fault diagnose. In response to the features of reducer fault, extensively collected data to summarize the typical characteristics as the important source of the knowledge base of expert system.Next, the attention was concentrated on the two key technology: the diagnostic technique was combined with the fuzzy diagnosis based on closing and the not precise reasoning method based on production rules, and the fault predication based gray theory. Two kinds of knowledge representation of Fuzzy relation matrix and production rules were introduced. Finally, the functional modularity of the system was given and in order to verify the system reasoning, an example was used to demonstrate.
