First the thesis has pointed out that although the capability of railway cargo transport has improved greatly since the span development of railway, it still can not meet the requirement of the increasing cargo. Then we will sum up the important meaning of developing a new kind of general purpose gondola car with an axe weight of 23t and 70t loading capability.The thesis exoatiated on the general situation of general purpose gondola car from 1950' to the beginning of this century, and introduced the main structure and parameters of the cars in different years, and main problems of these gondola cars. As the development of new materials and new technics and the consummation of bogie and brake system and coupler, it is possible to develop a new kind of 70t general purpose gondola car.The thesis has changed the traditional contrast design method, by research on the application of the present general purpose gondola cars, we have directly started with the main parameters and the structure, made improvement of the structure. We have used computer aid design method to optimize the structure and get a design project of the car. We have particularly introduced the process of static strength analysis by finite element software and dynamics analysis of the gondola car, and then based on the AAR standard and some different kind of loading spectrums, we have evaluated the fatigue life of the gondola car. The finite element analysis and life evaluation provide an important theory support for the design project.Finally, we have introduced the method and procedure and result of the static strength and dynamics experiment, and compared these experimental results to those finite element analysis results. We have validated the rationality of this project by analysis and experiment, and we believe that this research work will contribute much to future development of general railway gondola cars.
