Non-contacting gas-lubricated face seal is being applied more and more popular due to its excellent performances. The operating conditions of seal become high temperature, high pressure and high rotating speed with the progress of industry. During operation, some problems are aroused, especially the ones about the deformation due to thermal loads and mechanical loads. The distortion will cause the increase of leakage, spot contact until seal failure. In this paper, steady state temperature field, steady state pressure field, thermal distortions, structure distortions ,and couple field distortions are computed using finite element method; and the effects of sealing pressure, shaft speed and material property on temperature field and distortion are discussed, especially the pressure and material property effects on the taper. The variation of seal leakage, friction factor, thickness of film are analyzed, and the measures of controlling deformation are presented. The thesis is useful for research, design and application of gas film seal. The pressure field is computed using programs written in FORTRAN language in this article ;The strength distortion, the thermal deformation and the coupling distortion is calculated using finite element software ANSYS.
