With the development of the highway system, the speed of vehicles become faster, which force the engine power improved. At the same time, domestic brake system standard become better and better. All the above factors challenge the brake system greatly. Especially in the mountain areas, the speed control will need frequent use of brake pedal, consequently increasing the burdens of brake system. If all these burdens are ascribed to the service brake system, brake drum and brake lining will become too hot, and decrease the brake efficiency. Furthermore, the high temperature will wear the brake drum and brake lining intensely, shortening the life span of the lining. The high temperature can also cause the rising temperature of wheels and shorten the use of tires. More seriously explosion of the tires may occur, bringing great danger to the vehicles. To solve the above problems, there must be assistant brake systems installed to the vehicles, which is a system that make the speeding vehicles(especially the vehicle rolling down a long ramp) decrease the speed or steady the vehicle speed within a certain range, but that does not halt the vehicle. Compared with service brake system, although assistant brake system absorbs less energy in a short time, it can remain steady for a long time (or remain unchanged). While the vehicle driving down a ramp, its brake power is far less than emergency brake power, but in the whole process, more brake energy is needed, and merely using assistant brake system can do this. The working principle of assistant brake system differs from traditional brake system in that it can lengthen the life of the transmission system and the brake system. The research results are summarized as following:1. First, it generalizes construction and performance of compressed air brake system, functions on the vehicle, and the necessity of using assistant brake system. It also briefly introduces the working principles, advantages and disadvantages of the assistant brake systems.2. In the second Chapter, it discusses the working principles of the engine exhaust brake system and engine brake system, and it further explains this by examples.3. The main focus is on the third chapter. It emphasized on the working principle, basic construction and real effect, controlling style, installation, design and calculation of electric vortex. Through theory analysis the formula is obtained.4. In the fourth chapter, it explain the performances of electric vortex retarder by using an instances of calculating application and the vehicle test result in the mountain areas, proving the above said conclusion .In 2002, we made the plan for the research of electric vortex retarder. Through several years'hard work and practice, for the first time in our company, plan, calculation and check are accomplished completely according to ECER13and GB12676-1999. Facts show that the expected effect is produced.
