the problem of energy safety in china becomes very prominent, establishing a strategic oil reserve is one of the most essential elements. Underground water-sealed mined storage caverns is a better form of oil storage. But the design and optimization of these kinds of large-scale underground cavern group are problems to be solved.the work of this paper is as follows:(1) Optimization functions of commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS is employed to carry out elastoplastic emulation back-analysis of large-scale underground cavern group. Develop the shape of cross section of an underground storage cavern to achieve parameter with APDL language. By this way analysis file were obtained. With Sub problem approximation method and tools of random search the cross sections of large underground storage cavern were optimized. Find out the optimal cross sections under special geological conditions. The result shows that after optimization, the stability of surrounding rock is remarkably increased.(2) Find out the influence degree of every design variables for the cross sections optimal design with crown settlement as objective function in the straight wall arch cross sections and five-centered arch cross sections. It provides reference for the design and optimization of similar engineering.(3) Different of distance between every cross sections are researched and designed correspondingly in detail. Find out appropriate distance of different shape of cross section.(4) The HuangDao underground water-sealed mined storage caverns was taken as an example to show the practical application of these optimum design method. It was proved that the design researched the ideal effect. It has better prospects in engineering applications.
