The world today is the information digitalized one. The digital technology has been widely applied in all the aspects of people's life and production. Of course, the digital technology also plays its important roles in the field of industrial design. A designer shall have a correct understanding of digitalization and be able to rationally apply it in practice. Therefore, it is very necessary to study the application of digitalization in the industrial molding design.1. Perspective of Present Situation of Digitalization1.1 Concept of digitalizationTo be simple, the digitalized technology is the one using two digits, that is, 0 and 1 for encoding and expressing, transmitting and processing all the information by use of some equipment such as computer, optical cable and communication satellite, etc. The application of the digitalized design in the industrial product manufacturing refers to the whole process of product development by use of the computer software and hardware as well as network environment, building of the product data moldings and simulation of product design, analysis, assembly and manufacturing, etc. Digitalization not only penetrates the whole process of product development of the enterprise but also involves many aspects such as equipment layout, physical distribution, production plan and cost analysis, etc. of the enterprise. The application of digitalization can greatly improve the product development capability of the enterprise, reduce the period of product development, decrease the development cost, realize the optimal design target and coordination between enterprises and make the enterprises organize the global design and manufacturing resources to develop the new products in the shortest time as well as greatly improve the competitive power of the enterprise. 1.2 History of development of the digital technologyProfessor Negroponte of the US MIT presented the concept of post-information age, also called the bit age or digital age in the book Being Digital. It is a new age post the industrial age and the information age. The history of development of digitalization is, in fact, the one of computer. In West Europe earlier in Renaissance, scientists were making unremitting efforts to manufacture a machine that could help people calculate, but most of their efforts failed due to the overall level of science and technology at that time. In more than one hundred years since then, the scientists all over the world have been continuously making efforts to realize digitalization. With the scientific and technological development, the true computer has been gradually made. Now, the development speed of digitalization is more remarkable, and its scope of application has not been limited to scientific research and it has been access to every aspect of people's life.2. Characteristics of Application of Digitalization in the Industrial Molding Design2.1 Characteristics of application of digitalization in the industrial molding designThe industrial design is a new comprehensive discipline based on science and technology and the support of science and technology occupies the important position. The application of the digital technology in the industrial design is the Computer Auxiliary Industrial Design (CAID), which has been flourishing with distinct characteristics in recent years.2.1.1. accurateness;2.1.2. human-machine property;2.1.3. low cost2.1.4. some aspects of CAID to be developed and improved.2.2 Relations between digitalization and industrial molding design 2.2.1 Digitalization of design approaches and productsThe wide application of the digital technology not only improves the approaches of product design but also influences the property of the product itself. A number of digital products successively occur such as computer, digital TV, MP3, digital DV and digital mobile, etc. Digitalization of products lets people truly feel convenience and rapidness brought about by the digital technology and at the same time, people's demand for the digital products is continuously improving. The rapid development of the digital technology drives development of all the digital products, which promotes the continuous updating and improvement of the product design approaches so as to be more suitable to people's demand in the information age. Digitalization of design approaches and digitalization of products promote each other. Both of them are the reform that the digital technology brings about. It is a benign circulation from design, production to use and finally feedback of the use information to the design, which drives the economic operation and promotes the development of science and technology.2.2.2 Humanistic thinking in the digital designIn May, 1997, Deep Blue, the super computer developed by IBM won over Kasparov, the world chess champion. The competition attracted the attention all over the world. It is undoubtedly an epoch-making landmark in the long history of research of the digital technology. More and more people pay attention to the relations between a human brain and computer. By now, a decade has passed since the competition at the end of the century. In the past ten years, the digital technology has been in the unprecedented development. There are computers with stronger calculation capability that can be found everywhere than "Deep Blue". The digital technology has been widely applied all the aspects of people's life. In the industrial design, CAID has undoubtedly become the main design approach. "Humanistic design" is the topic that more and more people have talked about in recent years. The design purpose is to meet the human physiological and psychological demand; therefore, demand becomes the motive force. Demand continuously promotes the design to develop, influences and restricts the contents and modes of product design. The design is made by focusing on "humanity" whether it is for designers or consumers.3. Application of the Digital Technology in the Industrial Molding Design The application of the digital technology improves the methods of theindustrial product design. The modern industrial product design can be generally divided into three stages, that is, "concept stage", "design stage" and "engineering stage".The mobile industrial design database is planned to be built to further describe how the digital technology is applied in the industrial design.4. Forecasting of Development of Digitalization of the Future Product Molding DesignThe rapid development of the digital technology brings about the unprecedented change to our life. Human beings have entered a new age. The digitalization degree will become higher and higher in the future world. In the field of industrial molding design, the application of the digital technology will necessarily promote development of the society as a whole. However, it also needs our correct understanding and rational utilization. The industrial design shall be combined with the elite of human wisdom, take human beings as the fundamental object, study the development of human society and benefit human beings with the creative and sustainable attitude.
