With the aggravation of global environmental pollution and energy crisis, more concern has been focused on green ecosystem. As an important part of energy saving and pollutants discharge reduction, great importance has been attached to architecture energy saving in the field of architectural design. Accordingly, many new types of energy-saving materials and techniques emerged, the double facades building is the offspring against this background.As double facades building has many advantages such as energy saving, noise insulation, pollution resistance, etc, it has been applied more widely in the field of architectural design. However, the main material of double facades is glass and it is prone to be cracked because of heat in the architectural fire. Hence, it often leads to the spread of fire and disastrous consequences. This is the weakness part of fire resistance for double facades building. Currently, the corresponding research about the fire protection feature of double facades building has not been carried out widely home and abroad. The related fire design code has not been established in China. Therefore, it is quite important and urgent for the study on fire protection design of double facades building, which will have much effect on ensuring the fire protection safety of this kind of building and promoting its practical application.According to the basic principle of performance-based fire protection design method and taking the double facades of International Harbor Service Building of Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center for example, this paper conducted comprehensive simulation analysis of fire protection feature for double facades. The fire scenarios were determined based on possible fire conditions and its actual fire protection objectives. The fire spread situation under different kinds of fire scenarios were simulated during the analysis. Based on the simulation results, the fire protection design approach for double facades building was further constructed and the corresponding optimization method was also proposed. The approach is helpful to achieve the objective of safety, rationality and economy for the fire protection design of double facades building.This paper firstly summarized the relevant situation of double facades building. Then the weakness of its fire protection feature was analyzed. In connection with the double facades of International Harbor Service Building of Shanghai Harbor International Passenger Transportation Center, the energy saving report of double facades and the concept of performance-based fire protection design method was set up. By introducing field simulation model of FDS, the numerical simulation analysis was completed for typical fire scenarios and the fire impact analysis of double facades building was carried out. Consequently, the key points of fire protection design for double facades were summed up. Finally, the main study results were given out and the further researches were simply discussed.
