With the constant development of our economy, vehicle as modern conveyance is becoming more and more popular and bringing great convenience to our lives. However, more and more traffic accidents occur and result in huge losses of economy and lives. So the research of vehicle safety, such as the improvement of vehicle crashworthiness and the reduction of mortality in vehicle crashes, has become the most important problem of automobile industry and also the urgent task of car manufactures.By the simulation of the impact, the crashworthiness of the rhombus concept car is researched and improved, which can be reference in the design of vehicle crashworthiness. The main contents are summarized as follows:Firstly, the structure of the rhombus concept car, the impact protection regulations and the review of automotive passive safety research are briefly introduced, and the emphasis is the impact rule of C-NCAP (China New Car Assessment Program) including project content and scoring rules etc.Secondly, the fundamental theories of finite element method which mentioned in crashworthiness simulation are introduced. The finite element model of the rhombus concept car is established based on the CAD model and according to the C-NCAP. The integrated finite element model can be obtained after the elements, properties, materials, connection relationship are defined, and the boundary conditions are properly treated.Thirdly, all kinds of Finite Element Simulation are solved, for instance, Frontal impact, 40% offset deformable barrier impact and side impact with a moving deformable barrier. According to the crash simulation, compared the deformation of entire car, the crash force, accelerations, and energy-absorbing ability of main parts, the prediction of crashworthiness is finished.Lastly, this paper puts forward some improving measures of design. The results show the higher safety property owing to the particular structure configuration of this car. Simultaneously, the effectiveness of the proposed method and the optimum way of designs are shown through numerical results.
