It is consensus that there must be advanced methods to regulate and control the power system operation safely and economically, in addition to the reasonable network structure. A main measure that keeps the high quantity of power system is using the reactive power compensation devices. Nowadays, it is also an important subject related to such fields as power system, electric automation, etc. At the same time, more and more researchers pay attention to the reactive power compensation.Aim at the existent problem of reactive power compensation devices, this thesis analyses a kind of reactive power compensation static device which is made up of MCR (Magnetic-Valve Controllable Reactor) matched with FC (fixed capacitance). It is developed with power electronics technique and found on the breakthrough of traditional saturation reactor. What is more, it overcomes the shortcoming of traditional saturation reactor such as slow response speed, high loss and harmonic distortion etc. The static reactive power compensation device-MCR matched with FC not only has higher reliability and lower harmonic distortion but also can regulate the reactive power smoothly. So this device can be used in the power system extensively.The definition of reactive power and theory of dynamic reactive power is simply introduced in the thesis. The Circuit diagram and work principle of MCR is analyzed in detail. Ferromagnetic and magnetization characteristic is expatiated. The magnetism of MCR is analyzed and gets the operating mode of MCR. The basic characteristic of MCR about harmonic and controlled current is founded in theory. Besides, effective measure of optimized the performance of MCR is brought forward on harmonic, loss and response speed aspects, this is significant to the whole performance of MCR.On the theory of MCR, we use the software of MATLAB to construct simulation model. On the basis of the model, the control, harmonics, controlled-voltage to equivalent inductance, trigger angle to equivalent inductance, trigger angle to reactive power are emulated. The curve of every characteristic is present. On the other hand, we compare the results to the theory to prove the veracity and validity of the model.So we can use the model to research the MCR farther.
