Along with the development of world economy, energy and environmental protection become the focus that people pay attention increasingly. Diesel oil additives can substitute general fuel partly to save the fuel consumption, on the other hand they can improve the combustion performance in order to reduce the deleterious emission. The research of diesel oil additives is more and more paid attention all over the world. In this paper, experiments are carried out on a 4JB1 DI diesel engine to investigate power, economical, emission characteristics of pure diesel and EGMEA-diesel blend fuel with 0% EGMEA,10% EGMEA,15% EGMEA and 20%EGMEA. EGMEA which contains a lot of oxygen can dissolve in the diesel fuel easily, and can be used as the additive without modifications on fuel injection and combustion systems of the engine. The main conclusions are summarized as follows:(1) The fuel consumption slightly increases with the 2-METHOXYETHYL ACETATE (EGMEA) addition to diesel compared with the pure diesel fuel, on the condition that the power of the diesel engine is not reduced, but the fuel equivalent consumption improved remarkably when diesel engine fueled with blends;(2) EGMEA as an oxygenic additive has influence on emission characteristics in some degree. When its additive proportion varies from 0 to 20%, it can reduce smoke emission about 60% while not increasing NO_x emission when the engine works at different loads. This make reducing NO_x, smoke emission at the same time able.In this study, it is found that EGMEA is an excellent fuel oxygenate additive for diesel. It has a notable effect on reducing smoke of diesel engines and the blends used in diesel engine can significantly improve combustion, so that it is very valuable to be widely used in practice to reduce the vehicle emission.
