The present situation of energy resources and energy conservation both in our country and in the world is introduced in this paper. The manner of energy consumption and problems accompany with it are analyzed. Due to the reason of energy shortage and environment deterioration, the effort on building energy conservation is extremely necessary. Planting roof plays an important role in this field. The applications of planting roof in the world are introduced and their mechanism and effect to building energy saving and outdoor environment are studied.The thermal and humid characteristics of vegetation are theoretically analyzed. The theoretical models including physical and mathematical models are established. Some mathematical models are solved theoretically and tested by the experimental data.The experimental models of RPR and ROR have been built. Some parameters such as temperature, humidity, sun radiation and wind velocity were tested during the summer time. The thermal characteristics of planting roof under different weather conditions have been analyzed.The summer cooling load of both RPR and ROR is calculated. Correlations between the cooling load and outdoor meteorological parameters are obtained by our regression work. The primary energy consumption and environmental load (CO2, SO2, NO2 and sensible heat discharge in summer) due to the cooling load of each model room are calculated. The great advantage of PRP on reduction of building energy consumption and environmental load are shown. Some simple economical analysis of planting roof application is also presented.Effect of planting roof on indoor environment is also studied. Some thermal parameters in both RPR and ROR were tested simultaneously. The values of PMV are calculated depending on the experimental testing data. The comparison of PMV between RPR and ROR has also been done in our research work. The result of our research is clearly shown that a better indoor environment can be obtained within RPR with an improved PMV value.
