In this paper, using the database of FWD, a systematical study for the back-analysis program of the pavement elastic modulus was done in order to evaluate pavement structure properties. The results are as follows:1) Based on the iterative method, combining with initial value of modulus, the amended iterative method to back-analyze the pavement elastic modulus is developed. The theoretical results and test results show that this method can converge to a solution quickly, accurately and has fine stability.2) Based on the genetic algorithm (GA), the back-analysis program of the pavement elastic modulus is developed. Many engineering examples show that this method can converge to a solution accurately and overall.3) Applying the two methods to the actual projects. Through the comparison among three methods: the amended iterative method to back-analyze the pavement elastic modulus, GA to back-analyse the pavement elastic modulus and the international famous method MODULUS to back-analyze the pavement elastic modulus, their advantages, disadvantages and applicability are studied.
