Generator excitation system is very important for the voltage control and stability control of the power system. Accurate excitation system models allow for more precise calculations of the power system control and stability limits. It is needed to use detailed model and accurate parameter for stability calculation, and it has to include the influence of excitation system.Nowadays, There are various standard excitation system models defined by IEEE. Once a model structure is set, the next step is to derive unknown parameter values in the model structure. Excitation system models are intended to represent the overall dynamic behaviors of composite system components such as voltage regulator, commutator exciter, alternator, terminal voltage transducer, etc. The accurate excitation system model parameters can be obtained by parameter identification. The identification should be based on the data recorded from field test for the real excitation system.In this thesis, the structure and characteristics of AC brushless excitation system that often be used for large steam turbine generator excitation system are introduced firstly. Then we take a real 600MW steam turbine generator excitation system for example, set the generator excitation system models in MATLAB/SIMULINK, and identify the model parameters by intelligent identification. At last, Putting the model in power system simulation software PSS/E, and comparing the simulating results with the real system.
