With the rapid development of water resources in China, hydropower projects are moving to the west, and more and more large hydro projects are under plan, design, and construction, with the same characteristics of huge scale, more structures, and most of them are sited among high-mountain and deep-gorges. As limited by topography and hydraulic conditions, large and middle scale hydropower projects being or will be constructed are in diversion types. So, in the future, many surge shafts need to be built. Because most of the projects are located in west China, where geological conditions are quite complex, it is necessary to do study on design of surge shafts and key construction technology. Not only will the study have important referential values to the same projects but also forcefully push the progress of surge shaft in design and construction technology.Baoxing hydropower station is in diversion type with high water head, long tunnel, and surge shaft at the end of diversion tunnel. This chapter will check and optimize the type and layout of the surge shaft and at same time do study on relative construction technology on the basis of actual situation. It mainly concludes:(1) Based on the design results during feasibility study, compares resist type surge shaft with chamber type surge shaft, and studies on the feasibility of air cushion surge shaft for Baoxing hydropower station. Through comprehensive compares between geological conditions, structure arrangement, price and operating reliability of different designs, optimizes the design of surge shaft.(2) Explore construction technology and quality insurance measures for the finally chosen design (chamber surge shaft) to meet the aim of low investment, high construction speed, decreased influence on environment, and to push the development of construction technology of surge shaft.
