In recent years, a new technology which is called Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS), which is an effective instrument for modern power system operating safely, reliably and economically has appeared to improve the quality of power network. Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) which is the important part of FACTS becomes the global research focus in virtue of control predominant characteristic and nicer compensation effect. Comparing with the traditional reactive power compesation equipments, STATCOM has the advantages of faster regulation speed and higher control accuracy.The experimental equipment is researched aiming at the large capacity field application in this paper. Firstly, this paper introduces the types and development of var compensator equipment, the character and research actuality of STATCOM. The main circuit topology and principle of STATCOM are analyzed. Three-level multi-inverter technology is applied in the main circuit. At this base, the steady and dynamic mathematics models for STATCOM are deduced. It provides important direction significance for the control and simulation studies.The control method is analyzed to make the equipment provided with excellent performance. A new type of mufti-objective fuzzy controller combined with mufti-state linear feedback is designed for STATCOM. The mufti-objective controller can adapt the change of variables and identify the main objective from different operating states in power systems. And thus the correct control measure can be taken and the optimum control result can be obtained. The system-level simulation model for STATCOM is established in the paper.With the digital signal processor-DSP, the hardware and software design scheme of STATCOM are determined. The control part of STATCOM makes use of two pieces of CPU, which are used for central controller and pulses generator. The main functions of central controller include data sampling, A/D converting, data processing and user interface. According to the data provided by the central controller, pulse generator will produce the pulse sequence to trigger the IGBT by the drive circuit, in order to generate a corresponding reactive current which we needed.
