As an important joint in the old silk Road, Gansus geographical location and its cultural backgrounds give unique features on the development of Gansu's Islamic architecture. The study of the formation, development and evolution of Islamic architecture, as well as its spatial characteristics of layout and single housing is an indispensable part of going a step further to the evolution of architectural culture in Gansu's multi-nationality .Through historical data collection, field investigation and comparative analysis, this paper analyzes and studies the development as well as revolution of Islamic architecture in Gansu Province from different angles by putting them in the setting of the northwest where various ethnic cultures interact on each other, merge together and develop soundly. It also put forward a proposal from the perspective of architectural design in urban planning.The thesis is composed of eight chapters. The first chapter is the introduction including the object, methods, contents, frame and theoretical review. Chapter two to chapter seven is the body, from the historical point of view, chapter two introduces the transmission, integration and development of Islamic architecture ; chapter three generalizes the type and layout, overall features and architectural units; By taking Islamic architectures in Lanzhou and Linxia as examples, the features of architecture space and decoration are illustrated and the ancient achievements of six mosques in Lanzhou as well as its modern characteristics are introduced in chapter four; From the perspective of its location and layout as well as the relation between Islamic architecture and community, chapter five discusses the characteristics of Islamic architectural layout; chapter six mainly states the general features and its cultural connotation; Chapter seven focuses on how to combine traditional architectural culture with modern architecture in the new era and how to integrate the architectural semiotics embodying traditional culture into modern Islamic architecture which is a part of regional traditional architecture and culture in Gansu Province; The last chapter is the conclusion of the thesis as well as the future tendency of Islamic Architecture in Gansu.The appendix sort out the references, which is the foundation of the research.……...
