In this paper, the Evolutionary Structure Optimization method is studied for continuum structure. A procedure of an improved structural topology optimization method is developed on the ANSYS software platform. The conventional ESO method could be established easily on the ANSYS software platform. Based on the conventional ESO method and the concept of optimal route of load transfer, it is developed that a structural topology optimization method for continua structure is provided with a new element removal strategy. In this paper, based on the displacement sensitivity of structure, the stress sensitivity is derived comparatively strictly. The improved ESO method is applied to several examples and the results demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain more optimal structural topology. The proposed method is also feasible and effective for the problem of continuum topology optimization with stress constraints.Stress constraints are associated with each element. Therefore, a large number of constraints must be considered; and the sensitivity analyses associated with stress constraints is too expensive to be acceptable. To improve the efficiency of the ESO method, a strategy with globalization of stress constraints is proposed based on von Mises' yield criterion. The local stress constraints of element are transformed into the global strain energy constraints of structure. Numerical examples illustrate the promising performance of the strategy. In fact, the strategy is convenient for the problem of continuum topology optimization with stress constraints under multiple loading cases. Finally, an optimization computing scheme is studied based on the available CAE software, ANSYS as an example. Some methods are introduced for optimization computation, which could be helpful for further research work.
