The topology optimization of continuum structure is the most challenging, difficult, as well as hot research topic in structure optimization. This paper focuses on optimizing the material distribution in a given continuum design domain. As an important method of topology optimization of continuum structure, Evolutionary Structural Optimization Method is getting more attention during these years. Its further theoretical development and introduction into new engineering fields are of apparent significance. In this paper, the study of Evolutionary Structural Optimization Method is listed as follows:1. The basic theory and applications of several mainstream methods have been summarized after a deep study. Through this process, we learn to know the commonly used mathematical modeling methods of topology optimization method, which provides a theoretical base on the implementation of topology optimization program in this paper.2. This paper introduces a scientific summary and classification of ESO Method based on the adequate research of its idea, removal criterion, evolutionary strategy and recent development. Necessary explanations and derivations about ESO have also been made in the paper.3. The paper focuses on eliminating numerical instabilities, especially checkboard patterns, that exist in the process of optimization. By absorbing and integrating the previous research results, a more advanced ESO method has been proposed by improving the sensitivity filter technique, which successfully solve the checkboard patterns problems.4. After improvement, an optimizer, which bases on both improved ESO Method and ANSYS, has been successfully developed. The optimizer has proved to be reliable, effective, and engineering applicable through several tests, and thus has a certain reference value to actual engineering design.
