Recently, large numbers of high-rise buildings are built world-wide, and more new structural forms are occurred. For these high-rise buildings, sometimes it needs to set large local spaces or openings on specific floors or various adjacent floors and form the complex tall structure with large local space. The current study of the shake table tests shows that the dynamic characteristic of such structure system is very complex with remarkable torsional vibration, and the structure members have significantly torsional damage under earthquake load.In this paper, firstly, the torsional vibration characteristic of the complex tall buildings with large local space is discussed, and the torsion-resist design rules of the domestic and international norms are compared. According to the shake table test data of a complex tall building with large local space, the seismic response properties of such complex tall structure are analyzed and summarized.Based on the basic principle of dynamics, and the dynamic condensation of the structure freedom technique, the reduced mechanic model of the complex tall structures with large local space is presented. At this stage, it is difficulty to use the existing software to do nonlinear analysis for such complex structure precisely, so it can achieve accuracy and balance the calculation cost by using the condensation mechanic model. The condensation model of a complex tall structure with large local space is modeling in SAP2000. Then the model analysis, the elastic and elastic-plastic time-history analysis are conducted. During the elastic-plastic time-history analysis, the hysteretic model of the structures' torsional freedom is introduced. The calculation results are compared with the shake table test for evaluating the reasonable of the condensation model and the hysteretic model. Finally, some problems and aspects which require further studies are discussed.
