The study of using digital camera in engineering field has just started. The article is base on previous academicians' study on position measurement, crack detection, detection of structural deformation, use Visual C + + to create Etools image manipulation system. This system combines image processing, length calibration, position measurement, detection of structural deformation and will try to use the article to provide a basic idea to everyone.Firstly, the article introduces the basic knowledge of the camera which can be used to catch special images. Meanwhile, it will also give details about those specific theories relate to Etools, such as the basic concept of digital image, numerical description, bitmap file, gray histogram, the relevant principles of image processing. Furthermore, it will provide additional knowledge regarding Visual C + +(the basis of knowledge of VC + + and of MFC). According to the theoretical foundation of lens optical imaging and digital camera imaging principle, the knowledge about lens distance from the objects, lens distance from the images, the height of objects, the height of images, resolution, and relations formula between them and CCD will be provided in the article. At the same time, the usage of position measurement module will be given base on the final result of value of position measurement. Secondly, A new theory about the calculation of image processing of extraction of crack length and width will be introduced base on previous academicians' study in extraction of crack width on image processing and it will be implemented in Etools. Not only that, but also a new method of measuring horizontal and vertical displacement of bridge structure will be involved in setting up structure deformation detection module in Etools base on the theory of ordinary digital camera close-range photogrammetry principles and DSCM.In the mean time, the comparative test of getting those differences will be fulfilled base on its feasibility and accuracy as well.At last, this article will give further direction of study base on its current progress on developing digital camera's use in engineering field theoretically and practically.
