As China's urbanization process, the continuing development of city size and increase of the urban population, existing urban traffic net is unable to meet the demands of city traffic. According to the international large-scale urban transportation developing experience, UMT plays the pivotal role for easing urban traffic pressure. Under this background, it is important to develop the ATO system because ATO can improve the operationg efficiency, speed up the train pace, and ensure the safety.Genetic algorithm (GA) is an advanced intelligent control algorithm. It is used to solve highly complex issues. Genetic algorithm for solving the multi-target system problem like ATO has unique advantages.In this paper, to meet the ATO system's needs, author designs train automatic driving system control strategy which is based on the genetic algorithm, and the automatic train system software and hardware platforms. Finally, test the control results by simulation and field certification test. Main contents are as follows:(1) Study the existing ATO systems, sum up functional requirements. Improve the deficiencies and shortcomings of the existing system, and propose the more realistic requirements. Design the structure of ATO system based on the system requirements.(2) Design the ATO control algorithm. The work is carried out in three steps: First, manipulate the train model; second, optimize the running profile by genetic algorithm; third, design the controller to be used to track the target profile. Through the three steps, realize the ATO system and meet the requirements of ATO.(3) Design the ATO system. Both of the hardware and software are designed. Hardware system is designed mainly from three aspects: the overall plan, selection of equipment, vehicle interface. Software system is divided into 5 modules to introduce.(4) Test the ATO system to verify controlling results. The first step is to verify the effectiveness and ensure the normal function in the laboratory. The second step is to test the control result on the testing railway.From the result of the laboratory simulation and field testing, the system is able to meet the basic requirements of ATO. It has important practical significance of ATO system realization.
