Condition based maintenance (CBM) is of great significance to improve the ship's safety, reliability and mobility capability. It is based on acquiring the ship's condition signals accurately. As to ships, nowdays so many and distributed sensors are still be connected by cables, in which ways the whole weight and cost of ship will greatly be increased. In particular, it is very difficult to maintain so many sensors. Therefore, how to transmit signals of many sensors and calibrate them on line wirelessly is one of the key issues about ship CBM system. In this paper, the smart sensor standard IEE1451 is studied in detail and one method of designing wireless smart sensor node is developed based on IEEE 1451. The main contents include:1. The current situation and existed problems about ship monitoring systems are analyzed and the research & application of smart sensors at both home and abroad are investigated. Then the idea of designing wireless smart sensor node based on IEEE1451 standard is proposed and the key technologies are summmarized.2. The IEEE1451.1 and IEEE1451.2 standard are deeply studied, foucusing on the Smart Transducer Interface Module(STIM), Network Capable Application Processor(NCAP),TII interface and Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS),which put the foundation for the design of wireless smart sensor node.3. Considering the actual demands, IEEE1451.1 and IEEE1451.2 standard were cut down. Based on them, the hardware structure of wireless smart sensor node is presented. Then the STIM, NCAP and TII are designed respectively. At last the prototype of wireless smart sensor node is made.4. According to functions of wireless smart sensor node, the overall structure of the software is presented. Then vibration / temperature sensor data sample software module, STIM module, TII interface software module, TEDS software, wireless data transmission software module and testing software module are developed.
