The CFRD is not only one of main dams of earth-rock dams but also one of the most important structural forms in hydraulic structure engineering. The main body of dam is composed of rock-fill or gravels to support the dam. And concrete face on upstream is used to protect the dam from permeating. The CFRD is developing rapidly in short time and causes more and more attention of the hydrological engineering.Topology optimization is frontier topics and hot issues in structure optimization research fields recently. it is also the emphasis and difficulty of structure optimization. The essence of topological structure optimization is using thee energy principle to achieve the most super material distribution patter making the structural rigidity biggest under the given condition. This kind of material distribution patter is also the most ideal power transmission way. With the development and improvement of topology optimization theory, it is being used in engineering practices gradually. In this paper the basic theory of topology optimization is studied, and a series of suggestions and methods which are applied to face rock-fill dam are put forward. The specific researches are as follows:1,Systems on the finite element method and the basic tenets of basic steps, finite element analysis of the basic principles and basic steps, as well as finite element analysis software ANSYS functions and land seismic response analysis of the seismic method. And the iterative formula of topology optimization problem is derived from the homogenization method based on numerical solution.2,The FEM in topological structure optimization is analyzed and application of ANSYS FEM software and APDL is introduced. Meanwhile basic skills of ANSYS secondary development are studied and key steps to achieve the topological structure optimization of continuum are given.3,On the base of basic theory of FEM and ANSYS, aiming at the deficiency of ANSYS software which only provides D-P model in dealing with the rock-fill, constitutive E-μand E-B model of face rock-fill dam is developed by APDL.4,To make the volume the smallest topology optimization process under the distribution load is proposed according to the study of reasonable distribution form in space for the face rock-fill dam. General topology optimization programs are developed based on the ASYS FEM software. So topology optimization of face rock-fill dam is solved technically. All the results are satisfied, which indicates that application of topology optimization methods to CFRD is feasible.5,The case study shows that rockfill which needs to delete is in the middle of the face rock-fill dam after topology optimization. Considering practical engineering, secondary rockfill zone can be set in the middle of the face rock-fill dam and this has a certain significance for designing of CFRD.
