The advantages of water suppression technology, including environment friendly, fast extinguishment, low water consumption, and wide application have been received considerable attentions among international fire safety research field. The use of water for suppression is currently receiving increased attention as a replacement technology for halogen-based chemical agents which has been banned by the Montreal Protocol in 1987.This thesis introduces the definition, origin, fire mechanism and application of water mist suppression systems. Based on this advanced fire protection technology, experiments of water mist interaction with small-scale pool fire in confined space are carried out. Thermocouples temperature measurement systems and digital video camera are employed to measure the time-dependent temperature profiles. Parametric studies are performed to determine the effect of the heat release rate of fires, gas pressure and orientation of spray ejection on suppression of pool fires. The process of water mist in confined space has been numerically simulated. A model of water mist interaction with liquid pool fires is developed. Numerical simulations were performed by using Fire Dynamics simulator (FDS),Tupical parameters such as temperature, species concentration and combustion rate are investigated in terms of time change in the radial direction. The simulated results are identical with physics trends of the experiment data and validate the rationality of the results.
