Switched reluctance motor (SRM) utilizes double salient structure and there is no winding or PM in the rotor. It has some characteristics of high starting torque, good controllability, broad scope speed-regulation, and so on. Thus, the governor system which involves SRM is very competent and earns more and more attention. Nowadays, research concerning SRM is being performed worldwide, and some progeny have been applied to practical industrial production.Nowadays, research on SRM focuses on two directions: one is electric machinery design, another is control system development. A prototype is designed according to SRM theory in this paper, and the static characteristics of the motor, including flux linkage, are analyzed based on 2D and 3D FEM, on which design of a SRM rests. Besides, the influence of air-gap on a SRM's static characteristics is analyzed in this paper. Parameters which determine a SRM's performance still include diameters and polar arcs of stator and rotor, which still need to be researched to propose the objective function and restriction equation for optimizing parameters of a SRM. Analysis of other parameters have not been done in this paper as there is not enough time, and there is still much work to do for parameter optimization. In the end, flux linkage curves which are respectively obtained from FEM and indirect measuring method are compared, which demonstrate reliability of the FEM.
