The aim of short-term optimal operation of hydropower plant is using optimization methods to establish reservoir's water store and distribution strategy in different periods. Following the strategy can make the most use of the natural streamflow in the entire operation period. In abundant water period, reservoir stores water, while in scarce water period, reservoir uses the stored water to meet power generation demand and others. Economical operation for hydropower plant, whose aim is to determine start-up/shut-down scheme and to dispatch load among units, is the important component of short-term optimal operation. Following the start-up/shut-down scheme and the load dispatching strategy can consume less water, optimize the operation of units and lighten units'spoilage. In the electricity market, it can enhance the benefits of the power generation enterprises through using optimal operation and economical operation of hydropower plant. Concerning the features of Supahe-River cascade hydropower plants, the paper carries through a research on the short-term optimal operation and economical operation of the cascade hydropower plants. The main research work and the results are as follows:1. The paper establishes the short-term optimal operation model of Supahe-River cascade hydropower plants. A certain dynamic programming (CDP) model and a stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) model are founded respectively according to the different reservoir inflow. Detailed research are carried on the models'solution methods—dynamic programming (DP) and improved genetic algorithm (IGA). Other model-solution methods such as ant colony algorithm (ACA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) etc. are briefly introduced. Improved genetic algorithm is used to solve the models established. The results of the short-term optimal operation in abundant water period and in scarce water period are analyzed respectively.2. The economical operation model of Supahe-River cascade hydropower plants is established, including time optimization model which is to determine start-up/shut down scheme and space optimization model to dispatch load among the units concerned. The constraint conditions of the model are analyzed and a dynamic programming recursive equation of the model is established. Dynamic programming and improved genetic algorithm are used to solve the model. According to three different states of the units concerned, improved genetic algorithm is used to solve the model and the results are analyzed and compared.3. Computer technologies such as ASP.NET, Web Service technology and database technology are used to develop an optimal operation system for Supahe-River cascade hydropower plants. The system includes short-term optimal operation module, economical operation module, data management module etc. The results of the system's running are given.
