With the ever increasingly enlarge and complicate development of the power systems, operators office would be flooded with extraordinarily abundant alarm information of the relevant relay equipments which can hardly be processed whenever the fault occurs. The stability of the whole power system would be disturbed if the fault elements could not be located and removed. Fortunately, fault diagnosis system can locate the fault equipments and the improperly executed relays according to the structure of power grid and the fault information, and the fault location is the key issue among these function. Therefore it is an essential part of maintaining the stable operation of the power system to study on and develop a completed fault diagnosis method for power system.Studying on fault diagnosis system with efficient work, this paper presents a new step mode of the fault diagnosis of the power system based on Petri net. Established the model of transmission lines and bus bars for the fault information system, this paper forms the suspicious set of fault equipments according the fault information, deduces the fault equipments by step mode and mathematic methods, conclude the rule of the fault element determination and compares the reliability of the diagnosis results. This method has been put into trial application in power systems, and the applied results indicate that the established model and matrix algorithm of this method is accurate and well performed. Moreover, this method can be used in complicated circumstances like multi-configuration relays, breaks misbehavior cases, etc. Compared with other fault diagnosis methods, the method presented in this paper has more realistic meanings, and is demonstrated to be more efficient and more suitable for online fault diagnosis.
