Urban open space is an important link of holding the urban ecological equilibrium and urban natural program together. It not only has a considerate important function and status on the solving of urban ecological problem, but also has a responsibility of constructing leisure place with higher qualities and diversification, recording the process of urban evolution and variation and displaying the urban humanity sight; besides, it not only provides a comfortable, quiet and secure urban leisure place and avoids the deteriorating urban environment, but also reduces people's working pressure, calms people's emotions, enhances the popular aesthetic interests and satisfies people's spiritual requirement. As a result, urban open space has an important and positive meaning on urban substantial environment, portraying of urban image and improving living environment. In recent decade, the fast developing of city keeps us pursuing aesthetic sense of visional forms blindly and ignoring the influences of social, cultural and economical elements; it also makes the new open spaces losing the internal spirits of place, or makes the rebuilt open spaces losing the energy in old memories and the attraction to people gradually, and as a result it causes urban open space lose its sense of place. From this point, I have an investigation on urban open space in Harbin, to provide several design measures for urban planners for their future work, and consequently construct an urban open space with better services for people and more vigor and attraction.This paper has a study on the open space in Harbin on base of the Place Theories. First of all, it analyzes the essence of portraying sense of place and constitutes of it by means of analyzing cases of portraying sense of place of open space in and broad successfully, finding out the sameness in aspect of portraying the sense of place, and consequently providing several references and theoretical basis.Secondly, it points out the problems of open space in Harbin in aspect of portraying sense of place by means of arranging, analyzing and investigating the series of processes of it in cold areas and finds out the problems in aspect of portraying sense of place by means of constructing qualitative and quantitative analysis and estimation system on portraying sense of place.Lastly, it has a sample type analysis on the cases of two typical open places in Harbin, providing several related measures of portraying sense of place and also a type of new mutual design theory for instructing a majority of designers to make the design planning of urban open space in Harbin for better services, lead the construction of open space better, create more comfortable living environment and have a more significant meaning of open space.
