With the development of the power electronic technology and continuous improvement of the demands of power quality and reliability for the power equipment, reactive power compensation for power system is becoming more and more important. As one of the most advanced way to deal with reactive power dynamic compensation, digital controlled Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) has become a new research focus in power electronics field.The purpose of this paper is to build a STATCOM system with digital control. The operating principle of STATCOM is analyzed first in different aspects and according to which the steady/dynamic mathematical models are established. The direct control and indirect control of STATCOM are compared in detail and the indirect current control mode with inverse PI control is selected in this paper. The Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) is also analyzed in the end.Based on the study above, an experimental system of±2kvar/220V STATCOM was developed including power circuit, control, sampling circuit and protecting driving circuit. The control circuit using DSP TMS320F2812 as the core controller is designed and main functions of STATCOM experiment platform are implemented properly. The results of the experiments are given in the end, it is shown that the experimental equipments meet the demand of keeping stabilization and generating better output waveforms.
