Seepage is a primary cause for the failure of river or reservoir embankment dam. Aiming at ensure the safety of the embankment dam, real-time monitoring efficiently of the dam seepage and the hidden hazard consequently caused by the seepage is one of the most crucial part. Consider the dam soil temperature variations resulted by the seepage flow, one more efficiently new technology, the distributed optical fiber temperature sensing technology, is developed for monitoring of a dam seepage.By using commercial DiTeSt fiber sensing analyzing machine, the dam seepage measurement system, constituted of dam seepage simulate device, control unit, and fiber sensing unit, is established, subsequently some indoor and outdoor tests and data analyse are completed, which obtain some research harvest for distributed optical fiber temperature sensing monitoring of a dam seepage . The paper contains following contents:1. Integrated with many research references about the application of distributed optical fiber sensing technology at home and abroad, the theory, how dam seepage and piping occurs, is discussed, and the thermal conduction equation in soil medium accounted for seepage is also deduced, subsequently the relation between seepage and temperature change is learned.2. The distributed optical fiber sensing technology is proposed to measure dam seepage. Based on commercial DiTeSt fiber sensing analyzing machine, the dam seepage measurement system is established, subsequently hardware and software system are respectively designed.3. The dam seepage simulation system is advanced, as well as all components of the simulation device are designed.4. The dam seepage simulation control system is studied, that the programmable flow control valve is used to control seepage flow. The PID control mathematic modal of the intelligent control valve, model is ZAJQ, is built, then with software LABVIEW the control program is completed.5. With the developed measurement system some tests, not only seepage outdoor tests with the simulation dam built bv nature soil from Yellow River of Zhengzhou , but indoor tests to study fiber response as changing temperature and stress, have been done. Which obtains criterion to Distributed optical fiber temperature sensing recognise exactly occuring and development of a dam seepage.
