With freight vehicle traffic and axle loads increasing quickly, early deterioration in asphalt pavement including rutting and cracks etc. are becoming common. Therefore, it has become to be a primary duty for researchers in highway engineering to develop pavement performance of asphalt mixtures. Based on the successful experience of reinforced fiber being applied into cement concrete and light structures in 1950s, a fiber reinforced asphalt mixture may significant improve pavement performance. More and more attention has been focused on the new merterial and relative researches and applications have been carried out. Funded by the Traffic Scientific Research Funded project of Liaoning Provincial (Grant No.200610). This paper guided the application of fiber modified asphalt mixtures in experimental road. And the reinforcing mechanism of fiber and modified asphalt in mixtures and relative tests were executed herein. Main contents of the paper are outlined as follows:1. For common asphalt mixture and SBS modified asphalt mixture, Marshall tests method was adopt to obtain the optimum asphalt consumptions (OAC) under different fiber types and contents.2. Based on wheel tracking tests, split tests under common and low temperature, and immersion Marshall tests methods, the effects and mechanism of fibers on the property of asphalt concrete, including high-temperature stability, low-temperature cracking resistance and water stability were discussed in detail.3. For the middle layer LAC-20, the optimum fiber type and content was achieved on the base of test results. For the surface layer SMA-13, because lignose can not play the role of "bar between mesh" in SMA which polyester fiber can play, a part of lignose was took place by Bonifibers, and domestic polyester fiber was added in primitive lignose concrete. According to the tests results, the optimum fiber type composition and content was obtained as well.4. Pavement performance of asphalt mixture reinforced by fiber and SBS additive respectively were compared. And evaluations were executed herein. 5. Based on the study of pavement performance of asphalt mixture reinforced by fiber and SBS additive, different fiber compositions have been used in the experimental road. The effects of fiber on experimental road, including deflection, evenness, skid-resistance, structural depth and surface layer thickness were analyzed through the nondestructive detection results of experimental road,6. Economics and assessment of asphalt concrete reinforced by fiber and modified asphalt were discussed at last.
