Nowadays, the construction of urban waterfront in China is generally based on detailed control plan by urban planning authority, with design in terms of land use. The previous 2-D plan usually leads to a singleness of waterfront space after its transformation into 3-D urban morphology, which prevents hydrophilic activities. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to figure out how urban design could be used as a tool to solve the problem of waterfront elements segregation,by means of integration and 3-D design. This dissertation reviews the historical development of urban waterfront. It puts forward the issue of waterfront elements segregation characterized by its current situation in China. The scope of research is limited to a relatively small area, the waterside space. It refers to waterfront elements such as water, embankment, bank (plaza and green space),road, bridge and architecture, which are under the circumstance of urban open space. It discusses the characteristics of each element and the relationship between them,as a basic for further study. After dealing with the conflicts between these waterfront elements, the author concludes a series of integration strategies by case study. These strategies focus on the connection between each element and try to coordinate them by the linkage of different functions, resulting in a comprehensive urban waterfront with higher efficiency. Finally, this thesis analyzes the case of Spreebogen in Berlin, concerning history, design competition, completed projects and experiences, trying to test the integration strategies in practical program. This thesis on integration strategies of waterfront space is supposed to inspire the booming construction of waterfront in China.
