Further increased speed of railway passenger and freight cars in China and requirement for continuous increase of rescue range demand new type of railway rescue crane with larger rescue radius and capable of running at higher speed. However at present 160t type fixed boom railway rescue cranes with 30-odd in quantity can only reach 85km/h at the maximum due to its structure, therefore can not meet present railway modernization development.In consideration of comparatively great quantities of 160t fixed boom railway rescue cranes and room for improvement on its structure and performance, from economic perspective, MOR decided to improve technically 160t fixed boom railway rescue crane for its rescue range and working capabilities by substituting telescopic boom for fixed boom, as well as to increase max. running speed to 120km/h. The paper presents deep theoretical analysis and study on the crane's structure and performance from its current defects and problems based on actual requirements by railway transportation department and in QRRS 2007 Technical Development Project. Finally the paper suggests design concept and basic requirements for modification of 160t fixed boom railway rescue crane to telescopic boom.Many works have been done for this paper such as completion of design concept of NS160G type railway crane, redesign of critical component of crane (i.e. telescopic boom structure) proved by FEA with I-DEAS MasterSeries software for feasibility and reliability, modification and improvement on bogie design for better running performances by ways of optimization of suspension system in design, determination of installation position of modified end sill and traveling reducer, improvement of gearing system and brake rigging, increase of static flexibility of axle bearings, and addition of vertical hydraulic damper, calculation and analysis of dynamic behaviors of bogie with multi-rigidity system dynamics software in accordance with GB/T17426-1998"Evaluation and Test Methods of Dynamic Behaviors of Railway Special Rolling Stocks and Track Running Machinery".NS160G type 160t telescopic railway crane will surely become the one with most functions and largest lifting moments in China in the field of telescopic railway crane. It will play a great part in ensuring smooth railway transportation and will actively and greatly contribute to Chinese railway transportation development.
