In recent years, with the requirements of the rapid increasing traffic flow of highways in our country, the existing 4-lane highways constructed on the early stage can no longer meet the traffic demand. So it is very urgent to widen the existing highways in China. As we know, the uneven settlement between new and old subgrade happens after widening. It will reflect to the pavement structure and cause damage such as dehiscence and sink, which will shorten the service life of highways and endanger the safety of the running. So it is a significant research direction to analyze the behavior and influencing factors of the problem accurately, as well as finding some effective treatments in highways construction field.Based on the support of the repatriate personal fund of Chinese education ministry (206097), and through the survey home and abroad, an effective stiffness matrix results for transversal isotropic geological material was obtained in this paper with the application of homogenization method. In the following, the paper contacted with the fact in the engineering, using Drucker-Prager elastoplastic constitutive model and FEA program ANSYS, and carried out the nonlinear finite element analysis of the widening project. Then, it achieved the best calculation range and the worst load case by analyzing the stress-and-strain behavior in the subgrade. Meanwhile, a sensitivity analysis of several subgrade design parameters about the uneven settlement was carried out.A series of control standards and prevention measures were adopted to prevent the uneven settlement between new and old subgrade in the world. Some of them were discussed in this paper. Basing on the conclusions derived above, the effect of the treatments were analyzed and compared. The main conclusion was summarized and a further study's direction was anticipated at the end of the paper.
