A Study On The Waterfront Landscape Design In Riverside City

The waterfront is the main space to open in riverside city. Under the circumstances of being careful about the water environment, it is a hot point in China's urban construction to improve living environment, to optimize city image and to boost the riverside exploitation through rebuilding and updating the waterfront. Up to now, the waterfront exploitation in China is mostly focusing on the physical form design level to beautify city or to promote the city image, it is seldom to probe deeply into the service condition of the existed riverside landscape. To analyze the service condition, to seek the approach of solving the problems, and to integrate the relative experiences and lessons are helpful to provide valuable references, to perfect the final landscape design and to form the more harmonious spatial environment in the process of the transformation and renovation of the similar areas.The waterfront is a finite natural resource and it bears the weight of the special history and character of a place. Wuhan city is flourishing by its water, its geography, economy and culture conditions are typical in riverside cities. The waterfront exploitation, the important and particular part in the urban design, has a great influence not only on the urban landscape, but also on the urban economy. Therefore, taking Wuhan as the example to study the waterfront landscape design will be significant to social, economic, and cultural development of Wuhan.The paper firstly introduces the history and development process of the urban waterfront construction both in abroad and at home, and compares the development trends and spatial features in transformation and renovation of the urban waterfront in China. Under the premise of combining the existing waterfront spatial design methods, the paper induces and analyzes the characters of the waterfront landscapes and the design inscapes, the paper also probes a series of problems such as the relationships between the ground landscape and the environmental behavior, the contradiction between the design purpose and the using process, the influence of the waterfront exploitation to the public spatial environment through taking the example of waterfront from Hankou to Hanyang in Wuhan where the paper compares vertically and horizontally and gives a case study from different points of view based on interviewing on the spot and observing and recording. The paper summarizes and speculates the investigation results and points out relative countermeasures, and attempts to point out the common landscape design ideas for reforming and updating the waterfront– the special urban sector. Finally, the paper explores the future development direction of the waterfront. The purpose of the study is to create a comfortable and vigorous urban waterfront opening space by using the landscape design from the users'points of view.
