Brushless DC motor (BLDCM) has been researched by many scholars because of its simple strcture, easy control and high reliability. In this thesis, a novel driver system for BLDC motor is developped. The main topics include sliding mode control for BLDC driver system, finite element analysis (FEA) for IMP(Integrated Motor/Propulsor), EMC/EMI design for IMP driver system and so on.The operational principles of BLDC motor are introduced in this thesis. Based on it, a digital experimental test-bed on DSP and CPLD for BLDC motor driver system is built.A research for sliding mode control used in BLDC driver system has been done depended on the test-bed.Because of the improper description for system model and the changes of parameters, the performance of BLDC driver system will be deteriorated. In order to eliminate decrease the influence of parameters variation and the system's improper description, a sliding model controller (SMC) with strong robustness is employed in this thesis. A new sliding mode controller composed of conventional sliding mode control with feedforward is used to improve its dynamic characteristic in this thesis. And the validity of the new controller is verified by simulation and experiment results. The static characteristics of five types of IMP are analysed through two-dimensional FEA software MAXWELL of ANSOFT Corporation, including magnetic field distribution, winding inductances, winding flux linkages and so on. A transient FEA simulation model of IMP is built by the combination of circuit simulation software SIMPLORER and MAXWELL. It is used to analyse and compare the torque performance of the different IMPs, the results are given in thesis latter. The electromagnetic interference is produced during the operation of the IMP driver. So the EMC/EMI problems should be considered during the designing. In this thesis, the EMC/EMI problems of IMP driver system have been analyzed, and the techniques to improve EMC have been introduced at last.
