The general arrangement design for a ship affects the whole project, and its result influences the ship performance greatly. 4900 PCTC designed by German and built by XIAMEN SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY CO., LTD, has high requirement on the limit value of GM for damage stability. It reduces the seakeeping performance. The amendments of theâ…¡-1 chapter of SOLAS to be carried out has higher requirements on damage stability and the Regulation 12A in MARPOL on oil fuel tank protection brings great effects to subdivision and general arrangement of this ship. In this paper, the GM is reduced by optimizing the general arrangement basing on criterion.Firstly, with NAPA software, the lines and compartments of 4900PCTC are constructed, and the damage stability is calculated. Thus the NAPA software is validated. Secondly, double hull are set in the areas of cargo tanks under the main deck, which leads to the immersing unsymmetrical seriously. Thus, the scenario of optimization of general arrangement is eliminating the side rooms. By simplifying the ship, the scenario is proved to be feasible. Then, in accordance with this scenario and the new rules of MARPOL, the general arrangement is optimized. According to the optimization, the compartments are rebuilt and the damage stability is calculated according to the new and old rule of SOLAS. At last, this scenario is proved to be helpful to reduce the limit GM for damage stability. The paper provides references in the general arrangement of the homogeneous ship and the calculation of damage stability in future, and the work in this paper is preliminary and foundational.
