Acoustic positioning is a popular technology which is achieved by applying underwater sound wave. It is one of the most effective methods for the underwater vehicle positioning and navigation. Thanks to its advantages on effective work range and positioning accuracy, it is widely applied in underwater vehicle development. The paper introduced several underwater acoustic positioning systems, and analyzed them from dimensions of their working theory, application and the advantages/disadvantages. Then the acoustic signal characteristics of the non-anechoic pool channel are discussed as well as its affections to positioning system. The next part of the paper describes a synchronous beacon short array positioning system in detail. The paper focuses on development of receiver, interface extension and the display console. The analog conditioning part is designed for amplifying, gain controlling and filtering signals, which are obtained from the receiver. The interface extension globally harmonizes and controls the system. Some necessary interfaces are provided by this part either. It is achieved by applying MCU and FPGA. The display console controls commands, calculates data and displays the result as well. It is developed on the C++ Builder platform. Finally, the testing data in the water pool is present. It proves that the design of system is reasonable and practicable.
