According to the process of performance-based design for fire protection, a standard process is built to service the performance-based design for atrium smoke management system. The detail step of standard process is studied, and focuses on the analysis in the case of mechanical exhaust. During the process of design, with NFPA92B:"Standard for Smoke Management Systems in Malls, Atria, and Large Spaces", a design conception is put forward to optimize the volume of smoke exhaustion, besides, the impact of smoke evacuation system, ventilation system and interaction system on the effect of exhausts smoke are analyzed, and the design parameters of smoke management system are confirmed on this basis. The FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) is applied to verify the performance of smoke management system. The fire characteristics of the different fire scenes are analyzed, including the distribution of smoke temperature, the concentration distribution of CO, the distribution of visibility, radiant fluxes and the sedimentation height of smoke layer, in order to determine whether the performance of smoke management system can satisfy the objective of performance-based design sufficiently. With the theories of fire protection economics, according to comprehensive measure the goal of conforming the security and the economic, an optimum scheme of atrium smoke control system is developed to by the approach of safety investment decision-making.The smoke management system of a modern shopping mall was illustrated for demonstrating the process of performance-based design and optimizing for smoke management system and the prospect of this study in the engineering are also showed by this illustration.
