The atrium has been adopted widely in modern buildings. It has challenged the traditional fire protection technology. From the 80s in last century, the new concept of“Fire/Life safety Performance-based System Design”has been put forward in developed country and begun innovating the old prescribed-based system. The new idea of“Performance-based System Design Code”has been advanced, which is the certain trend in“Fire/Life safety design”in the word. However, the current study of this subject in our country is still at the elementary stage. What has been included in our active norm is still prescribed-based code, that is the method based on volume change times, which has fallen into disuse in development country and has been proved to be so simple and inaccurate as to lead to great mistake sometimes. Thus, in order to develop a set of technological“Performance-based atrium smoke control”, a lot of research should be carried out based on the situation of our country. The mathematical model of smoke control system in atrium is established by the idea of zone model. The main influencing factors which are in the smoke control process in atrium are analyzed, for instance, the effect of fire size, fire location, atrium shape and the smoke vent area are correlated to smoke control system. The numerical simulation schemes based on the orthogonal tests are worked out. And then the extents of the influence of different factors are analyzed and the most suitable factor combination of the possible optimum design schemes in dynamic smoke extraction system is selected. The sensitivity and the uncertainty of the primary design parameters are analyzed taking advantage of the local parameter sensitivity analysis method. The objective of above analysis is to provide the criterion of parameters selection in dynamic smoke extraction system performance based design. The method of performance-based design and the design parameters selection for smoke control system of atrium fire are discussed. It demonstrates the smoke control performance-based design project for an office building following the procedure as developed in the study. It shows the prospect of this study in fire safety engineering design. It is provided basic data and design tool to satisfy the fire performance-based design for the atrium smoke control system.
