External wall crack may occur if the insulation system is not choosing properly. The improper insulation system can accelerates the aging and damaging processes in the exterior insulation system and may result in the reduction of the living amenity. Furthermore, the insulating effectiveness cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, careful selection of exterior insulation system will be of great social and engineering significance.Extruded polystyrene board is a novel technology for wall insulation system. In this paper, the feature of extruded polystyrene board and the principle of exterior insulation system are first analyzed. Then, by taking into account of the factors such as elastic modulus of the material, bonding, material deformation stress, wind loads, and so on, the problem of bonding of extruded polystyrene board is solved effectively by mortar and interface's technology. And the wall crack problem is solved by using polymer adhesive mortar and compositing alkali-resistant glass fiber. The design and the construction of the exterior insulation technology of XPS are then discussed. The effectiveness of the insulation system is verified through numerical examples, and the superior of the proposed insulation system is further demonstrated by comparison with other systems.The achievement in this paper further develops the insulation technology and promotes the application of extruded polystyrene board in insulation system.
